Kendrick Lamar shot the music video for his popular song "Not Like Us" back in his birthplace of Compton.
According to Hot New Hip Hop, Lamar got back together with his former Top Dawg Entertainment labelmates Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, and ScHoolboy Q for the Juneteenth holiday. Days have passed since Ken Kenar's "Pop Out - Ken & Friends" performance at the Kia Forum, which included a number of West Coast musicians. Ice-T hailed the star-studded event, which was livestreamed online, as a unifying moment for the West Coast.
According to Vibe, on Saturday, June 22, the legendary hip-hop artist shared a picture from the performance dedicated to the memory of the late rapper Nipsey Hussle on Instagram. Lamar seemed to be helping to arrange a "potential gang truce," according to Ice-T. For those who were exposed to or raised in gang culture, the rapper-turned-actor referred to the performance as a "cure for cancer."
Ice-T wrote on social media, "A Possible Gang Truce in LA is like a Cure for Cancer for Us." "Amazing regard for @kendricklamar."
Following his performance of "Not Like Us," Kendrick gathered his friends, family, and opposing gangs for a group photo on stage. He said to the assembly, "This sh*t is getting to me." Since Nipsey passed away, we've been f**ked up. Since Kobe passed away, we've been f**ked up. This is the epitome of oneness. We have lost a lot of friends to this street and music crap. It's amazing that we can all be together on stage. Each person on this platform has lost a soldier.
During an Instagram live, Snoop Dogg honored Kendrick Lamar's "Pop Out" concert.
"A heartfelt shout-out to K. Dot and all the West Coast homies who stood together cohesively, arranged in harmony and love," Snoop said.
It was enjoyable to see. It's lovely to see my folks all come together. You are the King of the West, K. Dot. "We unite, that's the kind of sh*t kings do," he continued.
