Three persons were killed and two more were injured in a mass shooting on the streets of Washington, DC. Around 8 p.m., police were called to the southeastern suburb of Anacostia, where the victims were found.
Two men and a woman died at the site, while two other men were brought to the hospital, one of them was in critical condition. Investigators said the murder scene spans many blocks and that they believe there are additional victims who should come forward.
Officers responded to the 1600 block of Good Hope Road SE, which is about five miles and a 15-minute drive from the White House.
"Gun violence of this magnitude is not tolerated in the District of Columbia." This is not a battleground. "We want our residents to feel safe," said Pamela Smith, interim chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, during a late-night briefing.
"We recognize that others may have been injured tonight." We'd like you to come forward.
"It cannot be left to the Metropolitan Police Department to decide what works and what does not."
Another mass shooting occurred in Washington last month, when nine people were injured while celebrating Independence Day in a neighborhood about a 20-minute drive east of the White House.
On August 5, the United States experienced its second mass shooting. A toddler was slain in Lafayette, Louisiana, and a woman and another child are critically injured. Two officers were also injured. According to the Gun Violence Archives, 436 mass shootings have happened in the United States so far in 2023.
"Let me be clear: this gun violence has to stop," said Acting Police Chief Smith.
"It's extremely frustrating." We know that someone in the community is aware of what is going on. Please contact us and give us with any information that can help us ensure the safety of our people and residents in their areas."
