Paris's Bercy Arena (CNN) — Everyone had been anticipating this moment, and it lived up to the excitement. Simone Biles was back in the spotlight of an Olympic final, just over three years after a terrifying case of the "twisties" forced her to pull out of Team USA's effort to defend its gymnastics team gold.
After dominating Sunday's qualifying round and finishing five points ahead of the Italian and Chinese teams, the Americans went into the day as the favorites. They successfully reclaimed their gold medal on Tuesday, essentially going through the same thing.
Here are five things to remember as Team USA wins another gold medal and exits Bercy Arena in western Paris.
She has a compelling argument for being referred to as the all-time greatest gymnast. She also distinguished herself on Tuesday from all other American gymnasts in history. Biles won the eighth gold medal for the Olympic team, more than any other American in history.
She also made another historical first. Having won her first gymnastics gold in the Olympics in Paris at the age of 27, Biles is now the oldest American woman to win a gold medal in the sport. The former record-holder, Aly Raisman, is five years her senior.
It's difficult to exaggerate how much attention this tournament is focused on Biles or how much everyone is watching her after her devastating elimination in Tokyo. The 20,000-seat Bercy Arena was hushed on Sunday throughout qualification, but for the occasional roar when she executed her tremendous twists and high flips and the loud applause she received after her routines were over.
Biles had a physical challenge on Tuesday in addition to her mental ones from Tokyo. Biles's coach said that she had initially had discomfort in her calf a few weeks prior to the Olympics, which she worsened during the warm-up for her floor performance.
She went to the locker room area from the arena floor and came back with a lot of tape on her lower leg.
She performed admirably on every apparatus and exhibited no indications of damage, thus it didn't seem to harm her at all.
The teams who finished second and third that evening forged their own paths. The women's gymnastics team from Italy took home the silver medal. The squad hasn't won a medal since 1928. The squad gave heartfelt embraces and loud cheers as they celebrated.
Together, the Italian gymnastics team and Team USA rejoiced, and they even had a cute hug.
Throughout the evening, Italy and the USA had been rotating on the same schedule, and during some of Biles' performances, the people from southern Europe could be seen supporting her.
Brazil secured the bronze medal with a third-place result, trailing Italy by less than one point. Brazil's first gymnastics team medal is this one.
Rebeca Andrade, who won the gold on the vault and the silver in the women's individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, became Brazil's first Olympic champion in women's gymnastics.
This gold medal really strikes a different chord with Suni Lee and Biles.
Although Lee experienced amazing success in Tokyo and Biles won the team gold in 2016, Tuesday's victory—which comes with a little more experience and maturity—means a little bit more.
"I mean, I believe that in 2016, everyone predicted that we would win the gold. "Everyone has kind of already predicted that we will win the gold," Biles remarked. since of this, every time we went out there, we performed our jobs and did win gold, but since we were still a bit impressionable and innocent, it didn't have the same impact as it does today.
I'm a lot older now, and we've done this before, so we're really enjoying ourselves and what we're doing out here. I believe that it is just different.
Lee concurred, citing the barrage of anticipation that surrounded the Tokyo squad and which Team USA eventually failed to meet. It was a little easier this time around.
