The mother of US gymnast Simone Biles, Shanon Biles, is holding out hope that her daughter would one day forgive her for putting Simone and her siblings in foster care because of her alcohol and drug abuse.
"It was difficult to part from my children, but I had no choice. I could not take care of them. Shanon, 52, told The Daily Mail, "I was still using and [my father] didn't want me coming in and out of their lives when I wasn't right."
As we previously reported, Simone and her sister Adria were placed in foster care at the age of six, and their grandparents, Ronald and Nellie, in Houston, eventually adopted them. Ronald's sister looted her other siblings in Cleveland.
"I'm just waiting for Simone and [her younger sister] Adria, and I would like to make amends with her personally," stated Shannon, who is currently clean and works as a grocery store clerk.
"I talk to Adria more often than Simone. All I would do is ask for her pardon. Is it possible for us to proceed? Don't evaluate me based on my history. Let's proceed," she continued.
Shanon did not attend Simone's recent major events, such as her wedding or her Olympic record-breaking feats in Paris in 2024. Although she knows Simone's contact details, she is waiting for her daughter to initiate contact.
In an episode of her Facebook Watch series, Simone Vs. Herself, the gymnast stated, "Being separated from my biological mom and placed in foster care before I got officially adopted by my grandparents, just set me up for a better route at life," according to PEOPLE.
"I feel like I wouldn't be where I am unless that turning point happened," she went on. I would still be Simone Biles, albeit maybe not the Simone Biles that the public and other people know. However, I also think that everything occurs for a purpose, and for that, I will always be thankful, since it gave me another chance at life.
Simone has acknowledged that Ronald and Nellie were instrumental in her journey to the Olympics.
