Bruce Blakeman, the 71‑year‑old Republican candidate challenging New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, recently reflected on his unusual link to one of the most famous musicians in the world. During an appearance on You Decide with Errol Louis, Blakeman said it still feels “surreal” that his ex‑wife, Nancy Shevell, went on to marry Paul McCartney.
Shevell, 66, wed the former Beatle in 2011 at Old Marylebone Town Hall in London, three years after ending her 23‑year marriage to Blakeman. Despite the high‑profile connection, Blakeman spoke warmly about McCartney, calling him a “nice guy” and praising how he treats his and Shevell’s son, Arlen. He noted that when they cross paths, they avoid political conversations.
Blakeman described his divorce from Shevell — a former Metropolitan Transportation Authority board member — as amicable. He has since remarried Nassau County Family Court Judge Segal Blakeman, whom he called smart, beautiful, and a “great woman.” He added that his blended family now includes two stepchildren and three grandchildren.
McCartney, 84, is known for his environmental advocacy, including founding the Meat Free Monday campaign with his daughters Mary and Stella. The initiative encourages people to skip meat one day a week to reduce environmental impact and improve personal health.

The music icon has also been outspoken about politics, frequently criticizing Donald Trump. In recent years, McCartney has mocked the former president’s public behavior, challenged his stance on climate change, and woven political commentary into his music — including the 2018 track “Despite Repeated Warnings,” which he has acknowledged was inspired by Trump.
McCartney has also spoken about the unifying power of music, noting that songs like “Hey Jude” can momentarily dissolve political divides, even “in Trump’s America, where Republicans and Democrats are at each other’s throats.”
Despite their differing political worlds, Blakeman emphasized that he wishes Shevell well and remains focused on his own family and campaign. As he put it, “Life goes on.”
