Priest Killed After Crucifix Falls During Livestreamed Mass

A livestreamed Mass in Guayaquil, Ecuador turned tragic when Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari was fatally struck by a falling crucifix while preparing Communion at Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro Church.

The 56‑year‑old priest was standing at the altar on Saturday when the large wooden crucifix behind him suddenly toppled forward, hitting him with force. Video from the service shows worshippers screaming and rushing toward the altar as parishioners shouted for an ambulance.

The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed his death, honoring him in a statement that read, “Our dear Fr. Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari … has departed to the Father’s House to enjoy His presence and His glory.” The message concluded with the traditional prayer, “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.”

The accident occurred just one day after the archdiocese publicly congratulated Sánchez Molinari on the anniversary of his ordination, according to local outlet Primicias.

Sánchez Molinari was a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, known as the Redemptorists. Before serving in Guayaquil, he spent several years as parish priest at San Lorenzo in Vinces, Los Ríos province. His former parish shared tributes online, remembering his dedication and pastoral care.

The Mass was being streamed on social media, capturing both the moment of impact and the frantic efforts to help him. “Father, Father … call an ambulance,” a woman can be heard shouting in the video.

As of Sunday, church officials had not released an explanation for why the crucifix collapsed, and the cause remains under investigation.

Sánchez Molinari’s death has shaken the local Catholic community, leaving parishioners mourning a priest remembered for his compassion, service, and devotion.
