Chris Brown has been sentenced to eight months in prison — but will avoid serving time — after a U.K. judge handed down a 12‑month suspended sentence for his role in a violent nightclub attack in London. The ruling follows Brown’s guilty plea to one count of affray for striking music producer Abraham Diaw with a tequila bottle at Tape London in February 2023.
A “Vicious and Unprovoked” Attack
Prosecutors described the assault as “vicious and unprovoked,” saying Brown hit Diaw twice in the head with a glass bottle while his vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, joined in by punching and kicking the victim as he tried to flee. Diaw was hospitalized with head and knee injuries.
Judge Tony Baumgartner emphasized that Brown’s fame offered no special treatment, noting that repeated use of a bottle as a weapon was “plainly dangerous” and carried the risk of far more serious injury.

Co‑Defendant Also Sentenced
Akinlolu, who also pleaded guilty to affray, received a four‑month suspended sentence. Both men had initially faced more serious charges — including assault and possessing an offensive weapon — which were dropped after the plea deal.
Arrest and Legal Timeline
Brown left the U.K. shortly after the 2023 incident, prompting police to issue warrants. He was arrested in May 2025 when he returned for a concert in Manchester. His guilty plea in July 2026 cleared the way for Monday’s sentencing.
Judge’s Warning
Baumgartner reminded Brown that the suspended sentence means he will serve the eight months only if he commits another offense within the next year. The judge also referenced Brown’s past violent convictions, including the 2009 assault of Rihanna, underscoring that “the law applies equally to everyone.”
What Comes Next
Brown remains free but under strict conditions. The suspended sentence marks another addition to his long history of legal troubles, even as he continues touring and releasing music.
