Lakers announce Bronny James move after Kings game

Bronny James' search for consistent playing time with the Los Angeles Lakers continues as the young guard begins his third NBA season largely outside the team's regular rotation.

Through the opening weeks of the 2026-27 campaign, James has appeared in just five games for the Lakers, averaging 0.8 points in 2.4 minutes per contest. His most recent appearance came Wednesday against the Sacramento Kings, where he logged one minute of action.

With opportunities limited at the NBA level, the Lakers announced Thursday that James and fellow guard Cameron Carr have been assigned to the Coachella Valley Lakers, the franchise's newly relocated G League affiliate.

Limited Role Continues

The assignment follows a familiar path for James, who has spent much of his professional career splitting time between the NBA and the developmental league.

Selected by the Lakers with the 55th overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft, James entered the league following one season at USC. He made headlines immediately upon reaching the NBA, sharing the court with his father, LeBron James, and becoming part of the first father-son duo to play together in an NBA regular-season game.

Since then, however, earning a permanent role in the Lakers' rotation has proven challenging.

Development Remains the Focus

Throughout his first two seasons, James routinely moved between the Lakers and their former G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers. The arrangement allowed him to gain valuable experience, build confidence, and receive significantly more playing time than was available with the NBA club.

That developmental strategy appears set to continue this season.

The newly rebranded Coachella Valley Lakers will open their inaugural season Friday at Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert against the Salt Lake City Stars. The assignment gives James an immediate opportunity to get meaningful minutes and continue refining his game.

Looking for Minutes and Momentum

While playing time has been difficult to secure under head coach JJ Redick, the G League provides James with a chance to stay game-ready and showcase his growth as a guard.

For a player still early in his professional journey, regular minutes could prove crucial as he works toward earning a larger role with the Lakers later in the season.

As Los Angeles balances development with championship aspirations, the organization appears committed to giving James consistent opportunities to improve, even if those opportunities currently come outside the NBA roster.
